This post is dedicated to George Michael, who had a huge musical influence on me during my teenage years. I was a faithful fan (pun absolutely intended) — my favourites included Faith, Careless Whisper, Freedom, and my all-time favourite, Too Funky.
I’ll also admit to taking questionable fashion tips from Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - we’re talking fluoro bobby socks, a tube skirt, and a sailor hat. Thankfully, there’s no photographic evidence of this (that I’m aware of).
But back to food. Speaking of “choosing life,” let’s talk about chickpeas. This humble legume is known to support heart and bone health, regulate blood pressure, and aid digestion. In the spirit of health and the new year, I decided to dedicate today’s kitchen session to them.
Music + Motivation = Hommus
With George Michael in the background, I set out to make a batch of hommus with a twist. Music is such a powerful motivator for me, and in that nostalgic, happy groove, I got creative. The result? Mrs Howell’s “Too Funky” Hommus — a flavour-packed dip with Moroccan spice, cashews, and coconut oil.
Mrs Howell’s “Too Funky” Hommus Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon ras el hanout (Moroccan spice mix)
Method
- Add all ingredients to a food processor.
- Blend until smooth, or stop after 15 seconds if you like your hommus a little chunky.
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
How to Serve
This hommus is delicious with raw carrots, spread on homemade spelt bread, or topped with fresh tomato. It’s also great as part of a mezze platter, or as a dip for crackers and veggie sticks.
Why Chickpeas Deserve the Spotlight
Beyond being versatile and tasty, chickpeas are:
- A great source of plant-based protein
- Rich in fibre to support digestion
- Naturally budget-friendly and filling
- Perfect for vegetarian and vegan meals
A Final Word
So here’s to George Michael, good music, and healthy eating. Chickpeas might be humble, but with the right spices and a little creativity, they can become something truly special.
